In the beginning, some of my male clients struggle to open their minds to the process of talk therapy. They’ll often say, “I don’t understand it…Talking about my feelings and emotions has never been something I’m good at”. Those men who really don’t want to be in my office are more expressive, “This is a total waste of my time and money!” Either way, all of these men start at a place where their current approach to life obviously isn’t cutting it.
As a male therapist, working in a predominantly female profession, I have focused my clinical practice on helping men raise the bar. What I mean by that is, becoming more tender and kind with your significant other, and more emotionally present as a father. “I’m a great catch…this may be harsh to say but I have other options out there”, or “I already do a lot for my wife! I’d do anything for my kids!” Did any of those thoughts just cross your mind? How about, “I work hard to provide for my family! I already do a lot at home”. With any of those examples, maybe you’re right…half right.
Working with me won’t be a cake walk, but let’s give it a try. Go ahead and schedule your first appointment and we’ll see what you think.
